Summary
"When Bud Hooker offered to buy a sandwich for a shabby little man whom he assumed was the town bum, he had no idea the man was Henry Kruger, who had just sold a mine for fifty thousand dollars cash and had more besides. Thinking he may have offended the wealthy man, Hooker decided to find Kruger and apologize. Amazingly, Kruger was not offended, but impressed. The country was full of greedy men, but few generous men. Kruger invited Bud to join him in a secret business venture that would require Bud to go to Mexico, since Kruger would be too easily recognized there. Bud and his partner Phil De Lancey had just escaped Mexico, but Kruger assured them that they would be going to a different region that was still peaceful. Lured by the prospect of great riches, Phil talked Bud into the venture. Kruger went over maps with them, telling them to memorize all the details, then destroying the papers. They were to meet a man named Cruz Mendez, who would take them to the location of the Eagle Tail Mine. After that, it was up to them to establish the title to it, but under no circumstances were they to trust Cipriano Aragon, who had stolen the mine from Kruger years ago. Confident that they will be able to meet whatever challenges come their way, the two friends set out the next day. But this venture will have more dangers than they expect . . ."--, Provided by publisher
